Abstract
In medieval astrology, judgment of temperament and manners
is a fundamental first step in natal chart delineation.
Whether or not an individual’s temperament is melancholic,
phlegmatic, sanguine, or choleric has a direct influence on
patterns of chronic illness, career choice, socialization,
selection of spouse, and other life affairs. How best to
judge temperament remains an unsolved question given choices
in identifying and aggregating significators made by various
authors. Analysis of horoscopes for publicly known figures
with ample biographical information is recommended as the
best approach to determine the optimal temperament model. To
this end, temperament models of Frawley (2002) and Greenbaum
(2005) are applied to the horoscope of Abraham Lincoln,
whose melancholic temperament is well-documented.
Failure of both temperament models to identify Lincoln’s
primary temperament as melancholic raise technical questions
concerning how best should a planet’s primitive qualities be
modified by factors including chart sect, position relative
to the Sun, and sign placement.
As the significator of Lincoln’s melancholic temperament,
Saturn is evaluated dynamically by observing events timed by
Saturn’s directions to the Ascendant, Moon, and the Sun. All
of Lincoln’s episodes of mental collapse are timed by these
directions as predicted by Saturn as significator of
melancholy. In addition, the directions provide additional
support in favor of the proposed rectification listed in A
Rectification Manual published in 2007. Of interest to
students of primary directions are additional observations
made on the author’s innovations which include choice of
optimal latitude, the primary directions sequence, and the
Solar Arc - Primary Directions Proposition.
At present, the paper covers temperament. Later in 2009, it
will be expanded to include delineation of Lincoln’s
physical body and manners.
